Brief Introduction to Parts of Speech. Training Note
Basic
understanding of parts of speech
Mr X is my best friend.
Look at this above sentence. There are 5 words in the
sentence. Every word is called part and the combination of all parts is
called speech.
It is understandable that part
means word and sentence means speech.
Parts of speech
are classified into 9 categories. They are noun, pronoun, adjective, article, verb, adverb,
preposition, conjunction and interjection.
Grammatical words:
(pronoun, article, auxiliary verb, preposition, &
conjunction.)
Content words:
(nouns, adjective, main verb, adverb &
interjection.
Some parts of adverb also can be found in grammatical
words.)
A brief note:
Nouns:
Name of the person, places ,animals, & things
Table, chair, TV ,water, India, elephant, boy, girl,
Stephen…etc
There are countable and uncountable nouns to
create singular and plural forms.
Pronoun:
It is used in place of a noun. I, we, you ,they, he,
she, it, me,us, them , him, her, myself, yourself, itself…etc
Adjective:
It is a word used for description. It describes
quality, quantity, and number of Noun
& Pronoun especially.
He is a good person. There are 5
students. There is a little
water.
(It is used before a noun and after a verb.)
Article:
Definite article: the
Indefinite article: a,an
I need the
flower. There is a ball.
Verb:
There are auxiliary and main verbs in
English. Main verbs are Present verb V1, Past verb V2, Past participle verb V3,
Present participle verb V4, and Present in singular form of verb V5.
( V1+ing = V4
/ V1+ s,es, ies = V5)
Auxiliary verbs are into three categories.
1: Primary
auxiliary
Be verb: is,am,are, was, were
Have verb: have,has & had
Do verb: do, did, done.
2: Modal Auxiliary
Will-would
Shall -should
May-might
Can-could
Must, ought to, have to, had
to, had better.
3: Marginal
Auxiliary
Used to, dare and need
Adverb:
It is the word which adds more meaning to a verb. It
expresses place, time and manner
Always, everyday, sometimes, quickly ,slowly ,rapidly,
here, there.
Preposition:
It is a word which keeps relation and position between
noun and pronoun.
In, on , at, by ,for , to ,from, inside ,outside,
under ,below, above,…etc
Conjunction:
It is a word which joins word to word and sentence to
sentence.
But,if,and, either, neither, or…etc
If you come, I will go there. He and his friend can do it better.
Interjection:
It is the word of which shows emotion and feeling.
Wow! How sweet!
Crap! Alas!
Now you have studied parts of speech in a
brief note.
