nouns plural in appearance but singular in use



As English grammar has rules of formation of plural forms from singular. Most of the cases when we notice plural nouns adding 's' we generally consider it as fuel and sometime commit mistakes in speaking and writing. Let's discuss which are the nouns are actually considered as singular do they seem to be plural.

All such nouns should be considered as singular nouns and they must be used to singular verbs.

Ethics, physics, mathematics, politics, statistics, economics, news, mechanics, athletics, gymnastics, innings, gallows, classics, summons. 

Incorrect: Ethics are used for morality.
Correct: Ethics is used for morality.

Incorrect: Politics are given importance in education.
Correct: Politics is given importance in education.
